Historische Quellen zur Frauenbewegung und Geschlechterproblematik

(Historical Sources of Women's Liberation Movement and Gender Issues)

With 1.5 million pages, the Historical Sources on Women's Liberation Movement and Gender Issues series is the largest compilation of German-language sources in this field.

The series contains two collections of monographs, ephemeral writings and gray literature: The Library of the Woman Question and the collection Sexual Experience and Body Culture. In addition, there are approximately 70 journals, several encyclopedias and calendars, as well as the complete nachlass of Käthe Schirmacher, a member of the inner circle of the German Women's Liberation Movement in her younger years. The nachlass provides approximately 63,000 folio of source material, including a rich correspondence with the leading women debating gender equality at the turn of the 20th century.

The abundance of unique sources and rare books in this compilation of material and the variety of issues covered thoroughly, contribute largely to making the Historical Sources of Women's Liberation Movement and Gender Issues an indispensable resource.

The Collections

With at present 6,500 and 850 titles respectively, and about one million pages, the collections Library of the Woman Question and Sexual Experience and Body Culture make up a large part of the total material. The publication dates of the works in the Library of the Woman Question range from the dawn of printing in the 15th century to the early 20th century. Early scholarly and edifying literature for women is contained as well as publications on social or cultural aspects of gender and sexuality or political writings from the Women's Liberation Movement.

The collection Sexual Experience and Body Culture refers to the vast discourse on the meaning and function of sexual experience initiated in the late 19th century. Between 1880 and 1932, Germanic culture became the locus of authority and testimony on the tension between sexual experience and modernity. Consequently, German language publications on these issues appeared in this period with a frequency and intensity unprecedented in history and unmatched by any other language in the world.

The Journals

The historic discussion of equal rights for women and its manifold implications on gender issues in the sciences, in culture, society, etc., soon resulted in the launch of a variety of journals. Independently of whether they were based on a scientific, political, emancipatory or conservative background – in those journals the zeitgeist found its primary means of expression.

From today's perspective this is the reason why journals count among the essential sources for the reconstruction of the historical views on women's liberation and gender issues.
